Hangul was created in 1443 by Sejong, the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, and was promulgated in 1446 in a book called 「Hunminjeongeum」. According to 「Hunminjeongeum」, the basic vowels of Hangul are hieroglyphs in the shape of Sky (ㆍ[ʌ]), Earth (ㅡ[ɯ]), and Human (ㅣ[i]). And it also describes the position of the tongue and the shape of the lips when vowels are pronounced, based on excellent phonetic observations.
