ヒトを頂点において見ると、チンパンジーはあと一歩でヒトになりそこねた類人猿です。先進国から見ると、チンパンジーの住むアフリカ奥地は辺境です。では、アフリカでチンパンジーと暮らしながら、現代社会と現代人を遠望すると何が見えてくるのでしょうか。「第三のチンパンジー」、「出アフリカ」、狩猟採集社会、文明、東アフリカの自然と歴史、南北問題、地球の未来などをキーワードに論じます。

人や企業のネットワークが持つさまざまな経済的機能が、近年、研究者の関心を集めています。このような動きを反映して、歴史分野においてもネットワークに着目した研究が行われるようになりました。ここでは、私が日本大学経済学部の澤田充氏と共同で行った研究をもとに、戦前日本の銀行が相互にどのようなネットワークを形成し、それが銀行経営や金融システム全体にどのような影響を与えたかについて述べることにします。
