In junior high school, high school, or college, you have probably heard about the current status and history of population in Japan and around the world. You have probably also heard about the declining birthrate and the aging of the population. In fact, when considering the future of Japanese society, population change has a tremendous impact, more than any other factor. Importantly, this population change cannot be understood without the use of mathematics. Mathematical demography is the study of analyzing population phenomena using mathematical models. Such models are also essential for understanding the dynamics of infectious diseases such as the current pandemic of the novel coronavirus. A basic knowledge of population dynamics is an essential education for everyone living in the world of the greatest population change in history.
