The Origin and Functions of Materials – The World of Femto, Nano and Exa (Global Focus on Knowledge)

Coordinator: Atsushi Fujimori Navigator: Chisa Hotta The fact that our world is made out of materials is well recognized. If we pursue an answer to the question of why and how these materials were made, we will go on an endless journey of exploration from the smallest units of matter to the origin of the entire universe. We find that there is a dynamic world beyond our intuition, which extends from the infinitesimal to outer space, and is controlled by enormously high energy and short time phenomena. On the contrary, the diversity of various materials around us and the functions of advanced devices are emergent phenomena, in which macroscopic number of atoms or electrons gather to create new functionality, which are not present in individual particles. Material science overflows with unlimited topics of interest. In this lecture, leading experts in physics, chemistry, and electronics will provide a clear insight into this field, from a broader perspective. In addition to science students, from a wide range of fields not limited to Natural Sciences I, we also expect many arts students to attend this lecture.

#1 Role of science: perspectives from physics

#4 Elementary particles composing substances

#7 Fundamentals of materials science and modern society

#11 God made solids, but surfaces were the work of the Devil
