Creating Mathematics - The Challenge of Mathematics (Global Focus on Knowledge)

The late professor Kunihiko Kodaira, the first Japanese to be a Fields Medal Prize Winner, often said that the essence of Mathematics lies in how to get to the mathematical phenomena hidden behind natural phenomena. His words accurately describe what Mathematics is really like, and in addition to that, we think we could say two more things. Firstly, we can find out mathematical phenomena not only behind natural phenomena, but also behind modern systems, such as society or technology. We extract mathematical phenomena from nature or from society, and then express these phenomena in the language of mathematics, creating a "mathematical model". Also in some cases, mathematical models are created from mathematics itself. There are always these kinds of observations when new Mathematics emerges. Secondly, the mere observation of a phenomenon is not enough to be a science. "No gemstones shine without polishing." This is another important point of view. We have to analyze the observed phenomena, synthesize them, and develop new mathematical tools if necessary, to sophisticate the mathematical models and to create a new Mathematics. In this lecture, we will see how mathematicians actually do their researches, that is, how they have thought and struggled to originate new mathematical theories. Since the mathematics taught at high schools or Universities is in complete form, it is hard to share the feelings with obsessed mathematicians. Our aim is to introduce you to the exciting world of on-site mathematicians.

#2 Mathematics “On Campus”

#7 Looking into the Mathematical world of optical illusions

#10 Understanding the orbits of planets
